His death will lead to a process to find a new spiritual leader of the world’s1.4 billion or so Catholics.

Pope Francis died of a stroke and subsequent irreversible heart failure, the Vatican says in a statement.

Francis had suffered various ailments during his 12-year papacy, with severe complications in recent weeks after a bout of double pneumonia for which he spent 38 days at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The Vatican confirmed late Monday the cause of death was a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.

Here's what we know

Remembering the pope: Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff in nearly 1,300 years, died on Easter Monday. He was 88 years old and died of a stroke followed by heart failure, the Vatican said. Tributes are pouring in and mourners are honoring him in churches around the world.

Francis’ last days: The Vatican’s announcement comes after Francis spent his final days participating in the celebration of Easter and making a high-profile appearance in public after battling multiple health issues.

Trumps to attend funeral: US President Donald Trump announced today he and first lady Melania Trump will be attending the funeral in Rome.

What happens now? The pope’s death prompts a period of mourning, after which all cardinals under the age of 80 will convene to pick the next leader of the Catholic Church. It typically takes between two and three weeks for a new pope to be chosen.

Pope Francis, a voice for the poor who overcame fierce resistance to reshape the Catholic Church, died on Monday, the Vatican announced. He was 88.

Francis was elected in 2013 after Benedict XVI retired. He was the first Latin American pope in history and the first from the Americas. Before he was pope, he was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires.

He chose the name Francis to honor St. Francis of Assisi, who is revered among Catholics for his work with the poor.

As pope, Francis championed the poor, migrants and the environment, and he quickly gained a reputation as a modernizer, with an outward-facing approach that saw him speak out boldly on humanitarian crises such as migration, war and climate change. He also sought to reform the church by tackling elitist mentalities among the clergy, demanding a compassionate approach to divorced and gay Catholics and insisting that the church welcome everyone.

In the last few moments, US President Donald Trump has confirmed he will be attending Pope Francis's funeral.

"Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis, in Rome. We look forward to being there!" he posts on his Truth Social platform.

It will be Trump's first international trip of his second presidential term.

Earlier, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said there were no plans as yet for Trump to travel to the Vatican for a memorial service.

Vatican seals Pope Francis’ official residence

The Vatican has sealed the pope’s official residence, symbolizing the beginning of the mourning period.

Vatican footage shared by Reuters shows Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, the camerlengo (or chamberlain), looking on as a Vatican employee places a red ribbon on the door of Pope Francis’ residence, tying it shut, before putting a wax seal on the ribbon. Farrell is then seen checking the seal and making sure the door is securely shut.

The building that was sealed was the Papal Apartment of the Apostolic Palace, the traditional residence of the pope. It was not used by Francis, who lived in Casa Santa Marta.

The sealing of the pope’s residence is a symbolic gesture done by the camerlengo – the acting head of the Vatican – that historically served to prevent looting of the pope’s residence. It symbolizes the formal end of the Francis’ pontificate.
